PETA-Approved Vegan: What It Means for Clothing

Vegan is a word that makes sense for food. For clothing, it requires a moment of thought. What would a non-vegan t-shirt even contain? More than you might expect.

What the certification confirms

PETA-Approved Vegan is a certification administered by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). It confirms that a product contains no animal-derived materials and that no animal testing was conducted in its development.

For textiles, this means: no wool, no silk, no leather, no down, no cashmere, no angora, and no animal-derived dyes or finishes. It also means that glues, buttons, labels, and all other components are free from animal products.

Why it matters for cotton products

A 100% cotton t-shirt seems obviously vegan. But the certification goes beyond the primary fibre. Some dyes use animal-derived binding agents. Some fabric softeners contain tallow. Some screen-printing inks contain shellac or other animal products. The PETA-Approved Vegan label confirms that none of these are present — not just in the fabric, but across the entire product.

What PETA-Approved Vegan does not cover

The certification is specific to animal welfare. It does not address environmental impact, working conditions, organic content, or chemical safety. A product can be PETA-Approved Vegan and still be made from conventional, pesticide-grown cotton in a factory with poor labour standards.

That is why it works best in combination with other certifications. On its own, it answers one question: is this product free from animal involvement? Combined with GOTS and OEKO-TEX, it becomes part of a complete picture.
